Resource Management, Inc. (RMI) is the premier residuals management company in the Northeast. RMI specializes in developing cost-effective options for daily landfill operations and landfill closure projects.
RMI landfill services include:
- Providing daily cover and interim closure materials
- Diverting non-desirable recyclable organic waste from the landfill
- Manufactured Topsoil for Barrier layer meets a permeability of 1 x 10-7 cm/sec
- Manufactured Topsoil for final closure topsoil for vegetative layer
Providing daily cover and interim closure materials
RMI permits and handles products that are well-suited for daily cover use, including wood ash, incinerator ash, short paper fiber, and sand filter materials. These products are approved for use for both daily cover and interim closure materials.
Diverting non-desirable recyclable organic waste from the landfill
RMI can help landfills divert challenging waste streams from placement and disposal in the landfill footprint. Options include transport to off-site alternative outlets (at a lower cost than landfill disposal), or establishment of on-site composting or soil manufacturing operations. Final diverted product is then available for use in landfill cover activities, or for distribution into markets off-site. RMI provides turnkey services for this option, including permitting, operations, marketing and sales.
Barrier layer – meets a permeability of 1 x 10-7 cm/sec
In general, short paper fiber is the primary component in both RMI’s barrier layer soils and in our manufactured topsoil. In the barrier layer soils, the short paper fiber provides for both low permeability and relatively high resistance to damage from the freeze-thaw process. Studies investigating the effectiveness of short paper fiber barrier layers indicate that the impermeability of the material tends to improve over time as the material consolidates. The organic matter in the short paper fiber adds some plasticity to the barrier layer, which helps to prevent the cracking that is sometimes found in older clay caps in cold environments, such as the northeastern U.S. RMI’s engineered soil barrier layer can be designed to meet a permeability of 1 x 10-7 cm/sec.
Landfill closure topsoil for vegetative layer
Manufactured topsoil in which short paper fiber is used as the organic matter component has proven to be a more effective vegetative cover for landfills than stripped, native topsoil, both in terms of grass growth and erosion-resistance. Short paper fiber, which is composed primarily of wood fiber, clay and lime, holds several times its own weight in water. As such, short paper fiber-amended topsoil is an organic matter-rich soil with a very high water-holding capacity. RMI’s manufactured topsoil resists erosion on the steep side slopes of landfills in heavy rain events, even before the establishment of vegetation. For this reason, municipalities using RMI’s manufactured topsoil for vegetative cover have realized additional savings when using the manufactured topsoil by reducing mulch covers after seeding landfill cover systems.
Manufactured topsoil is more cost-effective than conventional loam, synthetic liners or clay caps for landfill closures.
Manufactured Topsoil
RMI manufactured topsoil combines materials high in organic matter and nutrients with a common borrow sand to create a high quality topsoil.
Manufactured Topsoil is an ideal product:- Virtually no soil loss on 3:1 slopes, even prior to vegetative cover
- Withstands severe rain storms; high water-holding capacity
- Can reduce mulching requirements and length of uninterrupted slopes
- More dense vegetative cover than with conventional topsoil
- Long-term pool of soil nutrients provides continued vegetative cover over long periods of time
- Eliminates need to strip native topsoil
- Provides more sustainable vegetative cover
- Protects surrounding surface water and natural resources by reducing erosion potential
Manufactured topsoil is recommended for use over conventional loam by engineers who have seen the difference in performance. “This product is just amazing!”
